What is Active Release Techniques®(ART) to Individuals, Athletes, and Patients?

ART® is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

ART® is used to treat conditions that result from overused muscles. This can include:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee problems
  • Tennis elbow

HOW DO OVERUSE CONDITIONS OCCUR?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

These can cause the body to produce dense scar tissue in the affected area. The scar tissue binds up and reduces the muscles ability to move freely. The more scar tissue that builds up causes muscles to become short and weaker.
Tendonitis is caused when there is an increase tension on tendons. Both with scar tissue in muscles and tendonitis the nerves can become entrapped. Nerve entrapment can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness along with reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain.
